Pixels, Inches and Centimeters: How to Convert Image Sizes Correctly
Digital image dimensions and physical measurements describe different things. Pixels tell you how many picture elements exist; inches and centimeters describe physical output. A resolution value such as DPI or PPI is the bridge between them. This guide shows how to make that conversion without confusing metadata with actual image detail.

Pixels are not inches
A 1200-pixel-wide image does not have one fixed physical width. At 100 PPI it is interpreted as 12 inches wide; at 300 PPI it is 4 inches wide. The pixel count stays exactly the same. Only the relationship between pixels and physical space changes.
That is why design specifications should state both dimensions and resolution when physical output matters. Saying an image is 1200 pixels wide is incomplete if a printer needs to know how large it should be on paper.
Pixels to inches
The basic formula is pixels divided by PPI. A 2400-pixel dimension at 300 PPI is 8 inches. To convert the other way, multiply inches by PPI. An 8-inch-wide print at 300 PPI therefore needs 2400 pixels across.
The same relationship applies independently to width and height. If an image is 2400 × 3000 pixels at 300 PPI, its interpreted size is 8 × 10 inches.
Pixels to centimeters
Once you have inches, convert inches to centimeters using 2.54 centimeters per inch. For example, 8 inches is 20.32 centimeters. In practical print workflows, it is often easiest to use a calculator that shows both units so rounding does not creep into repeated manual calculations.
Remember that converting units does not change the image. You are describing the same source in another measurement system.
Cropping and resizing change the equation
Cropping removes pixels. Resizing changes the pixel dimensions. Both can affect the final print size or effective resolution. If you crop a 4000-pixel image heavily, the remaining image may no longer have enough pixels for the same large print.
When preparing a file, decide the final physical dimensions first, then work backwards to the required pixel dimensions. This reduces the chance of discovering too late that the source is too small.
